Each year a new crop of Ph.D.'s goes on the academic job market for the first time. This year, readers nominated candidates from virtually every field whom they considered to be first-rate in their research, their teaching, and their goals.We zeroed in on four rising stars who seemed to be outstanding in their fields: a social psychologist who studies mood, a communication expert with an emphasis on religion, a mechanical engineer with a love for cars, and a paleobiologist who studies ancient plants.
