Michigan to Provide Permanent Home for Internet2 Staff Offices
By FLORENCE OLSEN
Gov. John Engler of Michigan announced on Friday that the state would provide a permanent home in Ann Arbor for the staff offices of Internet2, an organization that now includes more than 200 universities involved in advanced-network research and education.
The Internet2 headquarters will be housed in the Michigan Information Technology Center, a new $10-million state facility that is expected to be completed by the end of 2003.
In addition to providing permanent space for Internet2's 60 staff members, the center will become the headquarters for the Merit Network, Michigan's research and education network, and the site of an Internet Hall of Fame.
"We have halls of fame for football players, hockey players, and baseball players," said Governor Engler, adding that the new hall would recognize people whose intellectual achievements "have transformed the world."
The 100,000-square-foot building, to be located near the University of Michigan's Ann Arbor campus, will provide "some great facilities with top-end technology," said Greg H. Wood, communications director for Internet2. But the permanent headquarters in Ann Arbor will not change how Internet2 operates, said Mr. Wood, with member institutions scattered throughout the United States "doing most of the work."
