A Digest of Recent Corporate News in Distance Education

- The University of Alberta will use new software from WebCT to expand on its online-learning platform. The university, which already uses some WebCT products, will participate in case studies and software tests for the company.

- Fathom, an online-education portal founded by Columbia University, will join with Elderhostel, a provider of education for adults over 55, to create the Student Learning Center. The project will offer free seminars and short courses at reduced cost to users of Elderhostel.

- NYUonline Inc., the corporate e-learning wing of New York University, has licensed its course-management software to Tech Resource Group, a company that provides educational programs to corporations. NYUonline released the software to the corporate market in October.

- Spectria, a technology consulting firm, has developed an Internet portal for Pepperdine University's Graziadio School of Business. The network allows students, many of whom are employed professionals, to submit and receive assignments and chat with classmates.
