National Science Foundation Awards High-Speed Connections to 22 Institutions
By MICHAEL BLASENSTEIN
The National Science Foundation has awarded high-performance-network connections to 19 universities, a research museum, and 2 research institutes. This brings to 221 the number of institutions with NSF-awarded connections to high-speed networks.
The awards average $150,000 for each institution, and support two years of work. The institutions will provide matching funds from their own budgets. Institutions can use the awards to connect either to the Internet2 consortium's Abilene network or to the very-high-performance Backbone Network System, which is known as vBNS and is operated for the science foundation by MCI WorldCom.
The foundation's High Performance Network Connections program has been in place since 1995, with the goal of facilitating scientific collaboration by connecting researchers at speeds of up to 2.4 billion bits per second.
More information about the foundation's advanced networking efforts is available at http://www.cise.nsf.gov/anir/
