Obviously this was written by dog lovers. All cat owners know that our laps, pillows, computers, etc. are their cushions.

Don't forget any papers you might have laid out on the table or floor.  My cats love to lay down on any new papers I  might get out.

True, but you have to be actively using those materials. The papers you have already graded? Nope, it has to be the ones you are grading right now.

Hi I think the conference scam is up and running again, I have gotten a similar message from an Allison in China to attend a Major Disease Conference in Warsaw, Poland.  I decided to ask them to pay my way instead of going online when I started reading some of the information to see if this was a scam, they said they would pay half but needed my cv and what my presentation topic would. Needless to say, I gave them nothing it this is a hacker they could be up to anything...

I just received an invitation to a conference in Singapore that contains the following statement:

"You are invited to contribute papers either in English or Chinese, which must include English title, abstract and references. The copy rate can not be more than 30%(include references ), and the article must be strictly typesetting in accordance with the template , otherwise the article will not be published, please respect the academic ethics."

This is copied verbatim. I don't know if I should laugh or cry.

I received this "invitation to speak" at a pharmacy conference just the other day:

"The purpose of this letter is to formally invite you, on behalf of the Organizing Committee, to be the speaker at the upcoming "International Summit on Clinical Pharmacy & Dispensing" on Nov 18-20, 2013. This conference will be held at San Antonio, Texas, USA hosted by OMICS Group Conferences."

Blah, blah, blah....

I am in the social sciences- I have no knowledge of pharmacy whatsoever!  They could at least make some effort to target people in the general field of the conference! But I guess it doesn't cost them anything to send out mass emails.

SCAM ALERT!

Various computer science conferences let people believe they are sponsored by the IEEE by telling prospective authors that the conference proceedings will be published by IEEE Press and made available through IEEE Xplore.

This is not necessarily true. A bona fide IEEE conference is always sponsored by either of the IEEE societies or by a technical committee of the IEEE Computer Societies.

Prospective authors should look for explicit signs of IEEE sponsorship or assume it is not an IEEE conference.

I get invitations to give talks at various OMICS "conferences" weekly, but I loved the one I got this morning. The conference is allegedly on Genetic Engineering, and it has a theme (like a prom?).

The theme is  “The Power of Gene in turning Ordinary into Extraordinary”

I want to know who Gene is -- he sounds like someone you want on your side.

And the scam includes charging people fees after papers have been "accepted" for publication.

It's a completely disreputable business run out of Hyderabad.

Is anybody else getting invitations to some kind of management conference at The Boathouse in Lagos, Nigeria?  I'm thinking of going because while I am there, I can collect the $76million that one of the locals is helping the estate of an Austrian oil rig worker avoid paying taxes on.

Seriously though, this The Boathouse thing is real.  Also seems sketchy as he77.

I just got an invitation to the "2013 International Conference on Edcuation and Educational Research (EER 2013)," which will be held in Singapore in August. It is very hard for me to take a conference seriously when they misspell the name of the field--not only in the subject line of the email, but in the body. As it turns out, I am invited to submit my abstract in not only "Edcuation and Educational Research, but in "Philosophy of Engineering and Engineering Education."

I am (nearly) speechless. I do think that perhaps if I get in touch with polly_mer we can work up an interpretive dance on the topic of Philosophy of Engineering and Engineering Education, though.

Please.  At least spell it correctly, if you're going to submit.
