I've finally gotten used to participants knocking on desks at the end of conference presentations... but is it normal for students in an undergraduate or MA seminar to applaud at the end of the class? Does it mean I put on a great show? Or is it sarcastic? Or...?

No need to be paranoid: it's a sign of appreciation. They would have used other means to express sarcasm.

Knocking is appreciative; if they don't knock, they hate you.

It's normal.

It's not sarcastic, but it also does not mean anything special, just a polite end to the talk/lecture/seminar (and alerting the sleeping participants that it's time to leave).

It *can* be used to drown out a speaker who goes seriously overtime.

You should actually make sure that student speakers in seminars get their applause by starting it yourself at the appropriate moment (because inexperienced speakers, happy to have finished their presentation, often forget to use an audible closure phrase and matching body language that cues knocking).

Yeah, knocking was very interesting.  Kinda sounded like stampeding horses.  They were smiling while knocking.  Germans do this, but I found other Europeans don't do it.  Hungarians and Romanians stomp their feet and sing "We will rock you".  If they don't do this, they hate you.

Can someone tell me if I am supposed to report spam or not?

I have reported several spam post in the recent past, but visibly, no action is taken. So, I don't know if I am supposed to continue to do it.

That's something of a non sequitur, but yes, you should report spam. Action is always taken; it just might not be right away.

I'm not sure why you're posting that question here, but yes, report it -- the staff mods will then be able to find it and remove it if we miss it. Or you can PM one of the member mods so we can take care of it. Spam is removed from these fora pretty efficiently, but sometimes we miss it or don't see it immediately, and member-mods don't get notified when somebody reports spam, so it might take a while for it to be removed.

Well, the reason has been removed by now.

This thread is surreal.

Now I'm hungry for a knockwurst sandwich.  Or a spam sandwich.  I'm that hungry.

if Applause is normal then you are really appreciated and if you feel over the limit then you might have fake applause! I am saying this by my personal experience.
