so hours&hours of chronicling have come to this...

« on: April 30, 2012, 10:58:09 AM »

So for whatever reason I was not able to sleep at all last night. I cannot take the day off, I have to teach in the morning and have office hours in the afternoon, so what do you all suggest I do to survive until 4 pm?

Speed?  Intravenous caffeine?

Or wear mirrored sunglasses all day so no one can tell when you are dozing off.

Count your blessings; that is way better then office hours in the morning and lecture in the afternoon or evening.

What did you do when you had to pull an all-nighter in college?

Seriously. What worked for you? Do that.

What TZ said.

Also, fatty food with protein (think peanut butter, nuts, a bacon cheeseburger).  You need to build a big bonfire of burning calories, and get active enough to use them.

Sugar and caffeine should be a last resort, only to be used for the last couple of hours.

Some of us are too old for decades-ago all-nighter techniques to work.

Stay busy and don't eat very much.

I'm pushing 50 and often do 36 - 48 hours at a stretch, usually do to travel. I'm fine as long unless and until I eat a full meal.

I travel lot (UA 1MM Platinum just missed 1K, for the other FF pax), and do this too, but my brain shuts down to do anything creative, and I don't tech well when exhausted.

Ok, so what works for you when the whippersnappers next door stay up all night and make loud noise on your lawn?

Fortunately, I live in a pretty quiet place, but I have a drug prescription for such cases.

Thanks you all. Unfortunately I did not have too much experience with all nighters in college, and the times I did, I could then come home around noon and simply pass out in my bed. I do feel I am a bit too old to be doing this kind of stuff... I can do the traveling while sleepless thing, to an extent, too, if I do not need to look professionally functional, that is...

One lecture done, one more to go...

I will try the protein thing before leaving the office.

Never underestimate the power of 10-20 minutes at your desk, chin in hand, with your eyes closed.  I set the timer on my phone when I need to do it.

Thanks again. My planned day is almost over, but apparently I also have to take a speaker out to dinner. It will be a longer day than I'd expected. I might finally cave in and try caffeine... Or sugar (which is more usually my preferred self medication method)...
