The Fantasy Assessment Thread

(1/8) > >>

larryc:
In our department meeting recently we were informed that we need to "refresh" our assessment policies. We were handed a worksheet on which were to write 1) proposed "student learning objectives" (SLOs!) and 2) "embedded, authentic assessments" of the SLOs.

Unfortunately I had to leave early, and so my suggestions of 1) "students will demonstrate the ability to fly" and 2) "instructor will push students off roof" were never added to our official assessment policy.

What would you like to add to your assessment?

melba_frilkins:
Now see, 1 is great. But 2 is entirely inappropriate. Assessments are about what the student can do, not what the instructor presents.

Just what do you hope the students will do after you push them off the roof?

You need a rubric.

Fly! You are right about the rubric though.

How to I assign partial credit to student flight? They whine too much if everything is pass/fail?

If they fail at flying once you push them off the roof, I very much doubt you will hear them complaining. And if by some miracle they do come crawling back to you, you need a higher roof.
