Case Studies in Science

Have any of you used case studies in teaching physical science courses?  I recently attended a workshop on case studies in science, but it tended to be dominated by life science educators.  How do you use case studies in your classroom?  I've been appropriating stories from the news, then having students pull out the relevant scientific information (at the beginning of a unit, before we cover the information fully).  I also have them discuss the societal impacts of the story (if it's a discovery, how does that affect science, is there an ethical dilemma, etc).  What do you think or what have you done (or heard of being done)?  It seems like my students are much more interested in the subject matter after the case studies, but I wanted to get a little feedback from other people that have tried it.
