The student had vaguely heard the JMJ thing before, but doesn't know how to spell Joseph and got the order of the names mixed up.

Perhaps just like Geoffrey is like Jeffrey, Geoseph is like Joseph.

And then Giuseppe is the Italian form of Joseph.

According to The Urban Dictionary but in the interests of forum decorum I'm gonna let you all click that particular link for your own selves.

In my opinion, Secundem_artem is precisely correct.

I think secundem_artem, rather, has hit the nail on the head.

When you figure this out, can you please start on the mystery of "Mr. W.H."?

Thanks for all the entertaining theories!

Here's an idea; ask the student.  It's a little crazy, I know, but it just might work.

I will do this if/when I next see the student.  We just had finals, so it may be a while.  I'll report back once I know something.

Jesus Guide Me?

I think this one is the likely winner, personally.

OMG, indeed.  Makes the option to ask the student for the explanation all the more, um...delicate.

Why in the world would he write thqt on his exams, though? It doesn't even make sense if it's the urban dictionary version.

Yea, it does.  If the student is utterly unprepared for the exam, they might be debating whether or not to sit the exam or return to their previously scheduled non-academic activity.

This seems more likely to me also, though I did wonder briefly about "Ja, Got Milk."

I'm going with a combination of "Jesus Guide Me" and the urban dictionary definition.  Sort of a special type of divine assistance.

One of my students writes the letters "JGM" on the corner of every exam.  I've learned from these fora that "JMJ" is an abbreviation for "Jesus, Mary, Joseph" and could be written on an exam as a prayer.  Anybody know what "JGM" means?

Take your pick:

Just Got Married

Jeepers, Get Moving!

Jungle Guide Material

Jets Giants Minnesota

Jamaican Ganja Marijuana

Jewish Goyische Muslim

Junkyard Goat Movement

Joyous Great Moment

Just Go Moo

Justin's Grateful Mother

Jicama Glazed Mayonnaise

I thought you would guess "Jon G. Margerum-Leys."

My favorite from your list is Junkyard Goat Movement.

Nope--I don't have a middle name.  My wife and daughters have threatened to give me one for a landmark birthday or graduation, but I've resisted so far.

My favorite from your list is Junkyard Goat Movement.

Might be a good name for a band.
