I would love to take a nice vacation, and take in a conference, but I'm finding no information online.  How do you find conferences for a) writing or; b) technology related subjects?

Nope tried that, doesn't work.  You get a lot of nothing.
I'm looking for a portal or a site just for university conferences or retreats.

Good luck.  Try your discipline's national association.

Join a list-serv, discussion forum (etc.) that is specific to the discipline. Ask around there.

National associations, yes, but also regionals.
