We have a forumite there.

I think they have taken the shooter into custody.

on a local UA site the posts are claiming it was at a *faculty* meeting in the building and involved "denied tenure."

According to this article, three confirmed dead, and it was Biology faculty meeting:

Live streaming local coverage here:

There is also a ton of live chat that appears to be among UAH students on this site.

Like the Concordia University shooting -- how horrifying.

It can't be a minor offense. In academia there are only two kinds of offenses: Appalling Offenses, and Unforgivably Appalling Offenses.

How horrible.  My thoughts, condolences, and best wishes go out to everyone touched by this.

The first article linked says there were 2 in custody.  If only one was the shooter I wonder what the story is with the other one--or, was that just a mistake in the early coverage?

Lots of websites have rumors posted--the same woman's name is coming up over and over again as she was apparently denied tenure this morning.

According to this site, she was actually in the meeting, where she found out she was denied tenure, and pulled out a gun: http://www.waff.com/Global/story.asp?S=11978812

While shooting another human being is in no way justified under such circumstances, if the "denied tenure" angle is true, hopefully it will lead universities to be more humane in how they communicate such decisions--even if the decision is a negative one.

How terribly sad.

Sigh.  These always depress me so much.  CNN has been covering it on the TV as well.
