Oh, I'm sorry to hear this. It doesn't seem like it should be possible for things to be so final at this point, but I know that is how it goes. Best of luck to you, and may the change this brings be filled with many pleasant surprises.

B&L, I promise to keep my eyes open for any opportunities that look like they could use an excellent drink like / with you.

Thanks, systeme_d. I have been wondering if any SC members I've encountered were on here.

I'm so sorry to read this news.

If you're on Facebook, add me there--I'm part of a group of non-academic job seekers talking about how to make the switch, a there are many people there who have done it and are fantastic resources.  I'd be thrilled to add you to the group!

thanks, marigolds. I am not on the Book of the Faces. But you know me on twitter, so please join the chat there - there are several academics I know in similar situations.

Bacardi, I don't know whether you have chosen to look into a completely different career path or not.  For some reason it seems like we/I would have to make a definitive choice to leave academia and stick to it.  Perhaps it's because of the very different timelines for jobsearches in academia and "the real world."

If you'e moved on to looking elsewhere you are sure to find something.

If you're still checking the joblists I wonder if you are finding a few ads. I have.
In fact, as I said elsewhere, after a year of a whole lot of nada in the last week I have gotten 3 interview invitations for positions that were only posted a couple of weeks ago.
Very, very sweet ones too.

My very best wishes go out to you.

Thanks merce. I have tentatively a position lined up, non-academic but related to my field, still waiting on various bureaucratic stuff to be confirmed. As long as it comes through I am very much looking forward to it, and being a related area it wouldn't preclude my trying again at the academic job market. But it may also open some doors in another direction, which could be good too.

I have been looking at the ads, haven't seen anything in my area in the last few weeks. Best of luck with your interviews!

I missed this thread, and wanted to say how sorry I am about your past travails and am offering good thoughts about the future. I got my first (and present) TT job 12 years post-PhD and after 11 years in a related non-academic position. I know someone who got their second TT position 20 years after he left his first, with a long stint in consulting in between. It's possible to get back in the game after some time away.

All good fortune to you.
