Just got a stack of midterm papers to grade this weekend. Class is big and I have no TAs. Two classes to teach. Have a job talk to prepare and do some research for my upcoming interview. Scheduled to present a paper. Scheduled to do commentary for two other people. All these in one week. How am I going to handle this? Gotta be efficient, efficient.

The trick is trying to plan ahead, so you have nothing else/everything else done. Then mark fast and don't do anything else that pops up except what's on your list.

First off, the grading. Do the students need these papers back in order to do the next stage of a project? Do you need to turn in midterm grades to the registrar? (Here we turn in midterm grades for freshmen, transfers and students on probation.) If the answer is no, put them off until after the week is over. Secondly, is there any overlap in content between the job talk and the paper you need to present? Can you give the same paper both places? Can you tweak it so the prep is the same but the presentation is slightly different? Thirdly, research for the interview. This is a good lunch with the computer task.

Prioritize - what can you put off a bit? Don't forget to give yourself time to take care of yourself; if you forget to do that, you'll possibly be less productive with your time. And of course, best of luck!

I guess that depends on why they are getting As. Is is because you are glancing at the papers and giving A's without really reading the midterms? Or is it because you are such an awesome instructor that they all have a complete understanding of the material? If it were me, I would vote that it is all about your teaching, assign the A's, and move on.

I started with top students, they got A's. Then, I moved on to everyone else and they did as well as the top students, some even better. I am reading them carefully and commenting on each.

Perhaps I should have graded those papers a lot harsher. I am afraid more than 70% of the class will get A's.
