Re: not capitalizing opening sentences: I didn't really know that it could annoy people. If it is indeed bad forum etiquette, I don't mind changing my ways.

I don't think reasonable people care.

It is considered bad forum etiquette as it is part of the posting rules published here http://chronicle.com/forums/index.php/topic,36858.0.html

As with all manners, there are reasonable people who care about this and reasonable people who don't care.  There are also unreasonable people who come down on both sides of the issue.  What I do know is that no one will get upset with you if you always use proper punctuation and capitalization, (although they may get upset with the content of your post) but there are people who may get irritated if you don't note the forum rules.  It is your choice - tick off an unknown group of people just for the heck of it, or be intentional about the people you want to tick off.

Back to the OP (though I think that, among educated people, not capping you sentences is a pathetic affectation), I got my first job offer at 7 p.m. On a Friday night.

I routinely call candidates as soon as I can, which not unusually is a Saturday late a.m.

Fair enough, but I don't want to meet the person who feels the need to be the internet capitalization police...

Police only know capitalization - DUI, APB, B&E, GSW, MIA, AWOL...

So, back to the original post... if it is acceptable to inform over the weekend, maybe someone could tell my SC? I'd love to hear from them now!

Yes, I too was hoping that I could give a definitive contribution to this thread by reporting I had been offered my dream job this weekend. No dice so far, though the sun hasn't set on the west coast yet!

Though no offers materialized, I must say it was a fairly interesting discussion. It provided good distraction and I learned a thing or two about forum etiquette, not to mention that weekend offers are indeed possible. Also happy to report that I don't feel as desperate as I did on Friday.

My motto for the rest of the week: hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

They are waiting for candidate #1's response. Would someone please tell the candidates it's OK to reply on the weekend?

My husband's department usually meets on Fridays for meetings. After the meeting, the chair called the top choice and told him that he was ranked first and details would be going through the Dean. They are allowed to do that. I think anything is possible.
