I can't leave the country on its own for a year without Big Brother taking over the school lunch program?  If anyone told me in advance I would read this headline, I would definitely have said it must be China you're talking about...

I heard this today and just about passed out from the sheer stupidity. First, why the frig are there lunch box inspectors? Second, they took a filling, decent lunch from a child and fed the kid 3 chicken nuggets? WTH? Third, no administrator, when the idea of lunch box inspectors was floated, stood up and said this was still America and we can get by without freaking lunch police? (Answer - Of course not. When you take the feds' money, you play by the feds' rules.)

I packed a lunch for punch jr until he graduated from high school. He was allowed pizza on Fridays, but that's it. The food provided in most school lunch programs is generally unhealthy and not what I wanted to feed my child. How did it get to the point that parents can no longer decide what they want their child to eat, or accommodate what a picky eater will eat, without the school getting involved? Punch jr had Muslim, vegetarian, and orthodox Jews in his classes, who also brought their lunches due to dietary and religious reasons - would the government make those kids eat the school lunch?

When I told punch jr, I got a nice 20 minute rant on liberalism, the nanny state, and the fall of the republic. If this kind of garbage keeps up, I'm pretty sure that my grand kids will be home schooled.

There's a very similar story on Weekly World News, a satire site similar to the onion: http://weeklyworldnews.com/headlines/44028/food-police-arrest-kindergartners/

It also went up today, so I can't tell which one was posted earlier. But the stories have the same quotes.

Quote
The government inspector was from the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale-Revised program at the FPG Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The program gives schools a grade based on standards that include USDA meal guidelines enforced by the N.C. Division of Early Childhood Development.
Since when do "government inspectors" work for universities?

1) The lunch was not taken away from the child.  She was given the additional food to supplement her lunch when it was determined to be not following the guidelines.

2) According to the Division of Child Development, the inspector was in error, so it's not the program, but that particular person:

Quote
“With a turkey sandwich, that covers your protein, your grain, and if it had cheese on it, that’s the dairy,” said Jani Kozlowski, the fiscal and statutory policy manager for the division. “It sounds like the lunch itself would’ve met all of the standard.” The lunch has to include a fruit or vegetable, but not both, she said.

3) The program was put into place by the Bush administration, in 2004.  Nothing to do with liberals: http://www.nutritionnc.com/resourcesforschools/pdf/schoolMealsPromoKit/FAQs/FAQ_families_techers_principals.pdf

Yup, fake. The nearest city is Fayetteville NC and there is nothing about this in the newspaper there. It is a Weekly World News story that metastasized through the idiot-right blogosphere.

Hey Mad Doctor, did you hear about Planned Parenthood's new abortion super center? You need to spread the word! http://www.theonion.com/articles/planned-parenthood-opens-8-billion-abortionplex,20476/

I knew I could count on you to throw in an insult or two, Larryc.  However, the way you casually dehumanize the most innocent of victims by making light of abortion is chilling.  50 million.  That's right up there in Joseph Stalin territory, and you've so dehumanized it that you are able to make light of it.  When or if someone comes for you, how would it be if the rest of us made fun of it?

The Onion story makes light of the notion that abortion is taken lightly by either side.

You were caught out promulgating a fake story. Nothing more. Had LarryC not thrown in the link to the Onion story, you would have had no retort.

Not entirely fake, but not the food police either: http://ordinary-gentlemen.com/blog/2012/02/15/a-north-carolina-non-troversy/.
