Getting close to making a decision about jumping to DePaul (yes, I am quite familiar with the recent tenure controversies there).

A few questions.
1. I keep hearing that they have recently been upping their research requirements at DePaul (roughly as important as teaching). Anyone who works there seen this shift?

2. Anyone there able to maintain a decent research agenda (yes I know it's not going to be an R1)?

3. How are the students? Are they unrealistic in expectations of professors or pretty reasonable?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I've taught at DePaul in the past. The students there are quite sharp. Most are serious and dedicated. The department in which I worked was wonderfully organized. And the location, well, Lincoln Park is beyond awesome.

Have a friend who teaches there in social science (has been there for years) and seems quite content.

I was an adjunct there some years ago. I can't answer questions 1 or 2, but most of the students are great, and diverse in pretty much every way imaginable. I had one minor helicopter parent issue and a couple snotty snowflakes, but most students were fun to teach, and some were absolutely lovely.

I know someone on the faculty who seems very happy.

I am an insanely elegant, super classy poor white, for the record.

1. Yes, research expectations are rising.

2. Teaching expectations remain high.  A decent research agenda depends on your ability to multitask, and how well prepared you are to balance competing objectives.  Support/resources for research = minimal.

3.  I have found the students to be bright.  Some quite so.  They're more career-oriented than my previous U and less likely to engage intellectually with any course that they do not see as having a direct bearing on a job/career.  On the plus side, grade complaints are few and far between.  Occasional snowflakes, but mostly sincere and good natured.

Don't expect to be able to afford to live in Lincoln Park unless you have a rich uncle!

hope this helps,
