If your references were checked, why does it take so long to hear anything?  I guess the assumption is you can never really feel confident after a reference check because it does not automatically mean your search is over. I am still pushing forward with my job search even though several of my references where contacted.

This post makes no sense.

SC check references at different stages of the process. I have had some call references before they even did phone interviews, and others wait until after the on-campus interview.

There might be good reasons to discontinue a job search, but having your references checked is not one of them.  Having your references checked does not mean that you will hear something from the SC.  It generally means your application has moved forward in the process, but it does not mean that it will move far enough forward to clear the next hurdle.  Good luck.

Even if you were applying at Burger King, you wouldn't assume that you'd already landed the job just because your references got checked. You must have left some huge fact out of this story.

My references were contacted once after I got a verbal offer for a visiting job. It was just a bureaucratic requirement before completing the paperwork. Is your situation something like that? I could see how you might start to worry if you suddenly heard nothing from a school after your references got checked and you thought that the job was a done deal.

No, I never implied that verbal offer was made.  I just had a general question but thanks for all of this.  I am sure it will help.

Thanks for your input, your answer clearly makes more sense.

It's different in the UK, where references do not have to be provided at the time of application and are only taken up if a candidate is being shortlisted for interview.
