In general do community colleges offer relocation packages of any kind for someone coming into a full-time position who has a doctorate?

Thanks,

Autie

I didn't get relocation money. When I asked about it, the dean said that the school didn't even pay his relocation costs when he joined the CC.

I've worked at several CCs, and I've interviewed at many more, and to my knowledge, none offered any relocation expenses. Having a doctorate makes no difference.

Generally speaking, CCs have more rigid "rules" about all kinds of compensation and less possibility for negotiation. This does not mean that the pay is necessary less--it just means that you get what is in the salary schedule/negotiated agreement, which will usually be based on your years of experience plus education level, and you can't negotiate for extra.

I too have heard that it is rare.

(This doesn't mean you shouldn't ask, if offered the job.  If you're great and the dean has a sudden pot of money, s/he might offer it.  No harm in asking.)

Mine does not, but the pay is better. Most don't and are held to salary schedules like K-12 schools and have no room for negotiation.

I've worked at three CCs, and in my experience, only new presidents get moving expenses.

When I was offered my current job at a CC I asked about relocation expenses and the head of the department pretty much just laughed at me. Here at my CC it's simply not done. Many CCs can't even pay potential candidates to come for an interview.

At LastJob (which was a CC), I received (IIRC) a $500 allowance for moving expenses. I did it myself (U-Haul, parents helping) and managed to only lose about $300 on the move. That was, however, before the meltdown. I doubt they're paying anything towards moving expenses now.
