This one, too.

Middle Zelda does, indeed, know who Paul McCartney is, thanks to Mr. Zelda's love of The Beatles. He definitely falls into her "so old" category, though.

Well, he IS old...

OK, so I will show my ignorance and ask--was Nicki Minaj the one doing the Exorcist theme thing? Because that was both boring and bad. My response was, where is the talent? Why do you need all this dramatic theatrical stuff, unless you are trying to hide a mediocre voice?

I haven't watched it in years either. The Foo Fighters were boring to me, and spouse (who has his own radio show, so is more into music than me) agreed.

I watched it for Adele and the Jennifer Hudson tribute to Whitney Houston. Hudson's tribute was not as good as I had anticipated, but understandably, and it was fine for what it was. Adele was as good as I wanted it to be. I like that she has a great voice, writes her own songs, the songs are musically complex and she is also not a typical song siren. She also dresses modestly yet stylishly, a welcome change. Sorry for those of you who find her boring. I find Lady Gaga outlandish, with some talent, I think, but she hides it under ridiculous costumes and to me, seems afraid to just be herself and her voice.

And I love Paul, but he just seemed old. Really old. And I am kinda old, so I can say that.

I don't get Adele.  I find her boring.

Finally.

(Me too.)

I don't watch the Grammys because, given its history of choosing acts like Taste of Honey, Eric Clapton, and Steely Dan over Elvis Costello, Nirvana, and Emimem respectively, it seems to me an exercise in a failed industry congratulating itself.

Looks to me like Adele is the Kim Basinger of the Grammys (see Oscars/L.A. Confidential). I had never heard of her until her Grammy wins. I watched a video of her Grammy performance of Rolling in the Deep. It sounded like a bad copy of a Cee Lo Green arrangement in which she slurs her way around the beat, never hitting it precisely. Ok, I thought, maybe it's a lack of synchronization between the video and audio on Youtube. So I watched the official video on VEVO. Same thing. Then I watched a video her performing Set Fire To The Rain at the Royal Albert Hall. Same thing again. But with the addition of a weird croaking sound.

I'm a total non-expert when it comes to singing. Maybe VP can come along and explain what I'm noticing. Maybe it's just a matter of taste. But I think Lana Del Ray is a lot more interesting as a singer.

I watched it with Middle Zelda (age 12), which was hilarious. With the arrogance of youth, she described everyone over about 25 to be "so old." I tried to explain to her what LL Cool J stands for, and she just looked at me like I was crazy. Surely no one that old could be considered cool or deserving of love from the ladies.

Other observations from her:

"I don't know who the Foo Fighters are, but you can tell from their audience that they're an adult band."

So, I explained about the Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl.

"Oh, I know who Nirvana was. I just don't really care."

Me: "Wha???"

It's a little sad when your generation's cultural icons are dismissed by a child whose favorite band is Allstar freaking Weekend.

But she knows who Nirvana was, so you're doing something right.

Yes. My son posted something on his FB page about Steve Winwood. I had no idea he knew who Winwood was, but as he was growing up, I would make it a point to make him listen to a particular group or song. I wanted him to know rock and roll as well as he knew hip hop and urban music. I think taking those affirmative steps of making him listen has paid off as he now appreciates a wide range of music.
