Sarcastic and Inconsiderate

« on: February 13, 2012, 10:56:37 AM »

I watched the Grammys for the first time in years last night.  Mostly because football is over and I'm sad and not yet used to doing something besides sitting in front of the television on a Sunday evening.  Also, because I love Adele.  Homegirl cleaned up, winning 6 Grammys and sounding amazing with her live version of "Rolling in the Deep."

Jennifer Hudson sang a lovely version of "I Will Always Love You" in tribute to Whitney Houston.  She had to pause because she was about to break down.

Other thoughts, reviews, etc?

Adele, Jennifer Hudson, Paul McCartney's last song and the Civil Wars were highlights for me.

What seemed particularly nice is that is seemed that all musical forms received respect.  The tributes to the Beach Boys and Glen Campbell appeared to be genuinely enjoyed by all.  The people who won seemed to be humbled and grateful for the recognition.  I would have liked Mumford and Sons to win something for The Cave and Bruno Mars too for Grenade. They just had the misfortune to be up against Adele.

Low lights, Katy Perry, and Nicki Minaj were just boring acts trying to be interesting.

I thought LL Cool J was a charming host, he just seemed to be relaxed and having a great time.  I thought it was an entertaining evening.

I didn't get to see it, because I don't have TV service, but was very excited, because my niece was there representing the label she works for as a marketing person--they had a nominee in the Best Children's section. Alas, they didn't win, but she had a great experience anyway.

I saw parts of it; I missed the first hour or so thanks to those darn short people I'm raising.

Surprisingly, the stuff I liked best was the country stuff, and I don't usually like country. I've never considered myself a Glen Campbell fan, but gosh darn if I didn't love that performance. And the band that started it--what were their names?--was great. Also loved the Civil Wars.

I was also happy to see Adele clean up. Nicki Minaj? Ick.

I watched it with Middle Zelda (age 12), which was hilarious. With the arrogance of youth, she described everyone over about 25 to be "so old." I tried to explain to her what LL Cool J stands for, and she just looked at me like I was crazy. Surely no one that old could be considered cool or deserving of love from the ladies.

Other observations from her:

"I don't know who the Foo Fighters are, but you can tell from their audience that they're an adult band."

So, I explained about the Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl.

"Oh, I know who Nirvana was. I just don't really care."

Me: "Wha???"

It's a little sad when your generation's cultural icons are dismissed by a child whose favorite band is Allstar freaking Weekend.

This one, too.

Middle Zelda does, indeed, know who Paul McCartney is, thanks to Mr. Zelda's love of The Beatles. He definitely falls into her "so old" category, though.

I'm flashing back to the days of my youth, when--at the ripe old age of 5 or 6--was taken to see A Hard Day's Night at the movie theater and could not for the life of me understand why all the teenage girls in the audience were screaming and crying during the whole movie.  At that age, I did not understand the plot (such as it was), either, and fell asleep about half an hour into it.  But, I did know who Paul McCartney was, along with all the other Beatles; George was always my favorite.  I even had the "Beatles Flip Your Wig" game and a Beatles lunchbox (which I sold several years ago for some pretty big bucks), and their first three albums--all before the age of 10.  I still have the albums.

Just for fun the other day, I showed a picture of the Beatles in one of my classes and was relieved that most of the 20-somethings in the class recognized them.

Meanwhile, I didn't watch the Grammys because I had too much schoolwork to do, and I couldn't really root for anyone, since I've become sort of an older version of Middle Zelda--I just don't know much about many of the performers who were nominated.  Unfortunately, I'm not motivated to learn too much about some of them, either...Nicki Minaj is supposed to be talented?? Really?
