Crap, I just spent a million years writing a post and accidentally lost it, so long story short:

- I had made due dates for major assignments in my MW course to fall on Mondays so that they would have several days to work on them.
- Major snows screwed that up and now we are one class behind.

I want to push the due date for an upcoming assignment back one meeting so that they are back to having major writing assignments due on Mondays, so that when I do lots of stuff to prep them in the class meeting before, they will have more than 48 hours to get their s*** together and have time to get help outside of class and not turn in awful papers.  However, I have the following reservations:
- It will mean losing the one class period before final papers are due when they could have turned in a rough draft.  Final papers are worth 25% of grade so not much wiggle room there (although I could look into pushing back due date for papers if I can find out if not violating school policy -- right now they are due day of final exam and I'm not sure if I am allowed to push back from that)
- Some students have been planning around the new due dates, I know at least one is going out of town with family and while on the one hand it shouldn't be my problem if Suzy Snowflake wants to take off in the middle of the quarter, fact is they do sometimes
- Makes me look wishy washy (although they might not see me as a pushover after the test they had last week, mwahahha)

I can poll the class on their preferences of course, but I think nearly all would vote for pushing back out of the universal desire to procrastinate.

Confused and sad. Or happy. I'm not sure...

Push the due dates back 2-3 days (based on how many were lost to snow) and require students to turn in this assignment on line (or in person during your office hours). This will permit an adjustment based on weather, but will not make you lose an entire week.

I would give them a couple of extra days, but I now start every spring semester with a warning that unpredictable weather sometimes leads to unpredictability and that they need to just expect it and roll with it.  Ours are mostly used to this in the spring.  If yours are not used to weather issues, then I would be sure to stress that is the reason for the moved due date -- if you think they'll think you're wishy-washy.

Do you have the capacity to take assignment online?  Friday at 5 pm could be a good compromise.

Just be sure to couch the whole thing as "I'm doing this so that you have some extra time to work with these concepts after we cover them in class" and "snow, snow, snow."

OMG!  Friday at 5!  Why didn't I think of that???  (I take all assignments online.)

Silly me!  Sometimes you need someone else to help you find your own @$$ with both hands.
