Apologies if this is a repost or duplicate thread, but I didn't get a recent hit for Doonesbury nor see a recent relevant thread.  By coincidence after just holding our K-12 district science fair, for which I am one of the organisers and we struggled with just how many ribbons to give out, comes this: http://doonesbury.com/strip/archive/2012/02/12

I'm among the stricter graders in my department, whose graduate students all seem to think they deserve an A.  They don't, and I even give the occasional C to students that aren't cutting it.

I've had graduate students earn C and F grades, and I do mean earn.

I've had graduate students earn C and F grades, and I do mean earn.

For us there isn't much difference; a C is effectively failing; graduate students below 3.0 are put on probation and kicked out if they don't quickly raise it (typically one semester, but a student that has really blown it their first semester and shows they have repented and are digging their way out can petition for more time).
