Happened to me when I got my current job. I'd just marked them off the list as a "likely no" when I got a call asking me to come for a campus visit a mere week later.

Oh, can I relate to that! I've been on three interviews of late, with two calls coming just after I'd declared to my SO that I was sure I would not hear from them.

Happened to me, but it was very late in the year and I had already accepted another offer.

This happened to me when I applied to a service academy a few years back.

This happened to me one September for a position beginning the following August.  I was not offered the position.

It's not common, but it's also not unheard of.

In my field (social sciences) it is not uncommon, I'd say about 75% of my on-campus interviews have been without a phone interview. But it also might be because my sub-field is very small and it is likely that the SC is familiar with the applicants and/or schools they come from.

I'm in an MLA field. I've had two TT jobs. Both resulted from on-campus interviews that were not preceeded by a phone interview.

Once we had five candidates with roughly the same qualifications, so we had to do a phone interview first as we only had the budget and time to bring in three candidates for a campus visit. Another time we only had three qualified candidates, so we didn`t do a phone interview first.
