Glowdart and Theodosia are giving good advice.  It's true that prep is the time-consuming part.  It's also true that 4/4 doesn't have to mean 4 preps.  And yes, you can continue to research and write with 4/4, especially when they're mostly Gen Ed or otherwise lower division.  I do it, and so do many others.

Well, I have a 4-3 load. I rarely have all different preps. Even when I do, its even rarer that they are NEW preps these days (been here for 13 years).

I keep my nose in research. My productivity would be laughable at an R1 or high end SLAC, but I manage 1 or 2 well placed articles per review period. My older stuff is cited a lot, but most recent is only cited a little bit. However, my latest and greatest article has taken longer to get out. Almost done! I am also begining a book. I direct students as well, but only rarely is the work good enough to make it to one of my papers or anyone elses.
