As an ENTP, I'm going to have to play devil's advocate here and say most definitely, yes.

In my field, we do have a conference that sometimes is held in Hawaii. It is normally held in different cities across United States. This year it will be held it in Honolulu. It is indeed a reputable conference - 53rd. :)

Hawaii International Conference on the System Sciences (HICSS). See http://www.hicss.hawaii.edu/. They've been at it for over 40 years.

A friend went to a legitimate interdisciplinary conference on her topical area of study a few years back.  She said it was profoundly boring.

The major conference in my field rotates back to Hawaii every few years. Thus far I have been to Hawaii twice on someone else's dime.

The regional conferences in our field happen in places like Monterey, Las Vegas, San Diego, Reno, San Francisco, as well as Hawaii about every five years.  I have never been to one of our regional conferences but perhaps I should start doing so.

I just looked up the location for next year - San Jose.  Maybe I will wait one more year.

I just got an e-mail from Hawaii University International Conferences (HUIC) for the 2012 Education Conference, and it seems rather fishy. The conference is scheduled for July 31-August 2, 2012.  I clicked on the "More Information" link, and got a lovely Webpage with what I assume is supposed to be Hawai'ian music in the background.

There seemed to be a lot of typos on the Webpage.  No names were listed for sponsoring universities or other organizations. Additionally, no names of university faculty members (or anyone else, for that matter) were provided.

The last red flags that I saw follow:

"Reviewers are selected among academic members of the Institute and non-related academics and researchers. An attempt is made to homogenize the review process and reviewers decisions are based on overall quality of analysis. For cases in which the 2 referees have different opinions, the editor decides whether the paper is accepted or rejected."

and

"All accepted papers will be considered for publication in the conference proceedings (CD-ROM) which will be made available. Papers Not Presented, are not considered for publication."

I have a question for the fora, as well as for any trolls out there for this "organization": Why do you think we are this stupid?

As an ENFP, I'd like to say that some Hawaii conferences are legitimate.  Why not?  We had a chair here put a bug in provost Joyboy's ear that they weren't.  So Joyboy reacted predictably.  Disgusting.

During 2012 I am planning to go to - not one - but two conferences in Hawaii.  These are regular meetings of various societies that are held in various locations but happen to be in Hawaii this year.  Of course it is not that long a flight from the west coast and many nonstops - similar flight time for us to go to the east coast, only typically the weather is better in Hawaii.  In the past I have only been to two meetings in Hawaii but they were both good and they were regular annual meetings held in different locations each year.  The biggest problem with HI meetings is that people tend to show up for their talk but not so many other talks.  My recent trip to HI there were less than ten people at my talk and I considered that pretty good given that there was a nice beach not so far from the talk.

I wonder if we will see more of these as the Pacific rim becomes more and more active in research.  It is a rather central location if you want to collect people from the US and Asia in one place.

I have never been to a meeting in Vegas although I would definitely consider it if one came up.  Been to lots of meetings in CA area typically in SF, LA/Orange Cty, and San Diego.  But these are mostly not at vacation locations - e.g. the convention ctr in San Diego, Downtown SF.  Whereas the HI meetings are often at resorts.

Hawaii's Visitor Board has for the last 15 years or so been trying to expand its target market beyond the beaches and relaxation kind of tourism towards professional meetings. Hence the Hawaii Convention Center. But the HCC is far too large for most conferences, and hotels have that great mix of space and comfort. (The International Studies Association was in Hawaii in 2005, and while I thought it was well attended, I suspect the demographics of the visit would show the large number of visitors from Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and West Coast/Moutain of the US. Most of my East Coast friends did not attend, citing costs).

That said, APEC met in Hawaii this past November, (I believe it was their second meeting there, I seem to recall concerns over a "Seattle WTO" type event for the first one, but apparently a lot of protestors couldn't afford the airfare/lodging). High-level Official conferences (Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Asian Chiefs of Defense) are frequently in Hawaii.
