Hi everyone,

I am new to here and new to the job market. I am from UK (Phd in a first-tier uni + well known supervisor) and originally hope to find a job in UK but finally did only one application in Canada. I politely sent a follow-up email since I have not heard from them after 2 months of the closing date. I got a reply very quickly (1 hour). I am not very sure it this a positive or negative sign ?

The chair said: Thanks for your email. We should notify you by the end of this month(Feb.)?

So, what does it mean "notify me" - interview / rejection?

I am very confused and need some help here. Your feedbacks are much appreciated

It is neither positive nor negative.  They are telling you that applicants will be notified in about one month's time as to whether or not they will be invited to campus.

You emailed them before they completed this stage of the search process.

In the future, do not contact search committees.  They will contact you if they wish to interview you.

Thanks so much for your reply and advice.I understand :)  it is a long process... of finding a job. But any "not so good" impression has been given if I've contacted them?

If you do want to bother someone I'd suggest an admin person first rather than the committee chair.

Also, please use standard capitalization, punctuation, and grammar on this academic forum.

You will probably benefit from browsing the fora and reading existing posts on the topic of job-hunting. It will save you from having to ask a lot of questions. It will also provide you with valuable understanding of the job market, since basic details seem not to have been provided to you by your PhD program.

You may also wish to read The Academic Job-Search Handbook.

I think a polite "thank you" note after the visit is fine. I sent those when I was on the market and got them when I was on SCs. It is a nice gesture to thank people and leave it at that. Just do not be pushy in asking in the same e-mail when you can expect to hear from them (should have asked that during the visit). As others noted, the reply does not mean anything, and do not follow up on it.
