General thoughts on quality of life and Tulane (especially SPHTM) as an employer in particular?  I've been back through the previous Tulane and NOLA threads but - apart from the post-Katrina stuff and a couple on crime and safety - there's not a lot I've been able to find.  I know the city on a surface level from frequent visits, but I'm totally ignorant of what it's like to live and work there.  And I know very little about Tulane as an institution.

Dear poster, I did my PhD there in Latin American studies and languages. I emphatically shout its praises!!! The city is alive, the architecture, albeit run down, is thrilling. Its is a place of food and music. The school is competitive but supportive, people are kind and there is definitely money there. I would move back to the city in a heartbeat. Detractors: 1. you will likely have to evacuate once each fall for an impending hurricane
2. I have heard that the pay is low for a mini-ivy
3. Departmental politics could be a factor, look into your situation
4. Housing for purchase often needs major work

The goods:
1. The campus is a mecca for Latin Americanists of all disciplines
2. The campus and city surrounding are hip and beautiful
3. The people are kind and well meaning
4. The city and campus are very culturally active

Let's see:
1. Tulane students are outstanding! A friend defected to another technically more prestigious R1 university and has told me he greatly misses how intellectually engaged and high achieving Tulane students are.
2. The city itself is coming back in a big way. In the few years I've lived here I've seen whole new neighborhoods emerge. Housing is a little expensive, I think, but purchasing a house is not out of financial reach for most faculty.
3. Weather--summer is horrendously hot and humid, but the rest of the year is quite pleasant, and one needn't evacuate every fall. There's only been one evacuation since Katrina.
4. Entertainment aplenty, of course.

I loved living in New Orleans, but the number of parents who've told me about reaching down to pick up a hot wheels car and actually picking up a giant roach....<shudder>...
