In a few weeks I will be having a small launch event for my book. It is being held at an academic society, my publisher is paying for room rental and I'll be getting in some canapes, wine, etc.
I'm expecting/hoping about 30 people will show up.

My question is, do any of you have advice on what (not) to do?

The launches I've been to that were of this size have varied between the author giving a long, powerpoint-laden presentation, and those where the person introducing the author drones on for about 20 minutes (both of which I plan to avoid).

Should I just read a few pages? Or talk more generally about the book's themes?

Any tips from those of you who have hosted or attended successful launches, please share.

At my book launches we just had a toast and food--no reading, no talking, just having a good time and saying thanks to everyone who helped you.
