Wrote an NIH R01 grant in 8 days (from scratch!), and got it submitted today with 46 minutes to spare.
I need a drink.

I am only guessing that you've gotten back from an interview because of the subtext of desperation in your questions

Heh. You may be right. No choice, we're battling with a competing group.
But I feel good about it. Its a good grant and we spent a LOT of time making sure it was tight.
Fingers crossed...

I have written and received grants in that time frame. Go home and have that drink--and play hooky tomorrow.

Good luck! How's that drink tasting? I hope you're having one.
My boyfriend just submitted for this round, too. I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of you.
Out of curiosity, when you write an R01, how much text do your students and postdocs write for it? (I've seen the whole range.) My old lab wrote grants as a team, and after pushing hard to finish and submit, our PI would take us out for drinks (which was always amusing, since he didn't drink himself).

I'm still at work. Drink when I get home. Grant was about 2/3 my writing, about 1/3 my senior postdoc. Plus a little bit from a collaborator. Larry, unfortunately can't play hooky tomorrow. We're in the process of purchasing an expensive (about $60-70K) piece of equipment and the demo unit is being set up.

Was the second post sarcastic? Only eight days does not equal spending a LOT of time. While not the best grant writing strategy, still anything can happen in the world of grants. Good luck.

Nope, not sarcastic. I'm not new to the NIH thing. I'm PI on 2 current NIH grants (R01 and R21) and had a third that just ended, as well as being co-investigator on 3 additional NIH grants (R01 and 2 R21s).

I worship at your feet, Deadline Man. My old advisor was all about the last minute. I used to think he was crazy. Now I'm afraid I'm like him. I'm trying to start on the June deadline NOW.

What an excellent post. I have been thinking along the same lines but have could never channel my thoughts that well or grasp the concept completely. Your post absolutely states what I always intended to say.
