I know of a distinguished professor who jumps from R1s to R1s in a specific field every two years. S/he is a full professor, relatively young, has published extensively (in excess of 200), has tons of awards, yet s/he jumps around. A bit of a head scratcher, yes? Most tenured faculty in the ivies do not do this, right?

She is a hot property and whenever someone offers a significantly bigger salary or better working conditions, she goes.

Most tenured faculty aren't in a position to get awesome offers on a regular basis.

So schools hiring her need to know that they have to counter-offer to keep her.  I'd be inclined to do the same if I was just as awesome (which I am not), and if my spouse and family weren't so settled happily where we are.

Yep, I am guessing this is all about salary, perhaps with a dash of spousal accommodation. Good for her!

I'm not sure where the confusion is, it's precisely only the superstars who are able to do this.

yet s/he jumps around. A bit of a head scratcher, yes?

You never know what goes on unless you are in his/her shoes. You never know if this person jumps around because s/he likes to do, not to mention that what kind (or how much) of advantages s/he gets as it continues. It might not be what it appears outside. You never know.

I wonder if s/he really gets a big pay boost every time s/he hops around, if it occurs every two years. Employers are not dumb, so maybe that's not what it is about. Or, maybe that is true---s/he is very close to somewhere like the Nobel prize or something very big, so every university is just trying to get a hold of him/her at all costs. I don't know.

I am far from a superstar so I can't compare myself here, but I myself feel slightly victimized by this gossippy head-scratching/eye-balling. For some crazy unknown reasons, some people in my field think that I am one of those frequent job-hoppers, with their own imagination of ever-boosting salary trend, eye-balling both at myself and at my present and past employers. Only those in the close circle of mine know that is far from true. I wish I knew how to unwind those untruthful stereotypes on me tactfully, without advertising that I am an idiot---because it is true that some peers of mine do get those ever-boosting salaries throughout their hoppings.  F**ck. Good for them. Hmmm.... maybe its just an indication that they are that competitive and I am not.

I just wanted to say, if you don't know what it is, don't even think about scratching your head.
