I know two people who have been hired in "target of opportunity" searches.  Neither were underrepresented minorities, but both were Islamicists.  In my field, Islamicists get poached all the time.

What can we say but "congratulations!", I guess?

Its so out of the norm that few of us would be able to comment
usefully, and my own speculation on the matter hasn't gotten us anywhere.

Let us know if this indeed leads to an offer or already is, or whatever.
I will definitely let you all know what happens. I'm still not really sure what's going on, or if there are multiple candidates, or what, but I am being brought to campus already. So they do seem to be serious, and moving very quickly. Hopefully the visit will make everything clear...
I'm also expecting a decision from my two other campus visits in the next week or two, so between the three,  I'm feeling pretty optimistic that my job search might finally be over soon.

Well, I had hoped that everything would be made a little clearer by my visit, but no such luck. They kind of dodged my hints about this being a fast/unusual process.
I do know that they have now asked for letters, and that it will take 3-4 weeks before anything happens. I know that there will be a lot bureaucracy involved, but the timeline does suggest that they need time to interview other candidates. So back to waiting mode...

The mystery continues about how they found me. I thought I had figured out who gave them my name, but the person in question had no idea what I was talking about.
