I had to do a 1.5 hour teaching demonstration. I am definitely my own worst critic when it comes to things like this. I was a bit nervous at first, because students were supposed to attend my talk (they said it was a mix of students/faculty) and only the SC showed up! It definitely messed up my rhythm a bit and I felt silly asking them basic, undergraduate level questions during my demonstration. I did end perfectly on time, and I do believe I got all the information across accurately and somewhat interestingly. Some of my undergraduate-geared jokes fell flat due to not having a single student there. Anyways, I did interview later with many SC members and I brought up my demonstration. They all stated it was "good" or that I did "well." (Maybe that is a mistake to bring it up, but I could not resist) Do you think they were just saying this because I put them on the spot? Otherwise, the interviews themselves went very well.

The Chair told me that they are interviewing candidates over the next couple of weeks and that a positive decision would arrive sooner (2-4 weeks) but a negative decision will be sent out much later. When I was leaving he said that "we will be in touch soon." Good sign, bad sign, no sign?

I feel that I resonated more with some members of the SC, with one of them teaching the identical course that I just started teaching at another university. She even sent me a lab exercise she has her students do.

Am I overanalyzing the whole thing?

Yes, you are overanalyzing.

Yup.  Focus on something else to get your mind off of your interview.

Good luck to you.

Ok. I thought so. I've got plenty I can focus on in the meantime...

One more thing. When I was interviewing-members of the SC said the person I would be replacing "left to pursue other opportunities." I didn't ask. It's a VAP position that can go Full time, TT. I wonder if they had a problem with her...or the other way around....is this a red flag?

Most jobs come open b/c the previous person left for other opportunities.  It does mean something, but there's no way to know what exactly.

I'm not a drinker, but, yeah, go have some chips and watch a no-brainer movie.

You've done what you can as the application for this particular job.  Your current to-do list is applying for more jobs and doing the job you current have.

Also not a big drinker. Maybe I should be with all that I have on my plate currently (teaching-I got hired with almost no notice for a lecture/lab course, writing papers-two need to get out the door, experiments, defending thesis, 2-3 hours of commuting per day, applying for teaching jobs/postdocs, and a 1 year old boy). I couldn't help going over my interview because it was my first on-campus (obviously!). I've only applied for 4 positions, but think I probably should cast a bit of a wider net. That should take my mind off of this most recent one...

You don't have to take up drinking.  Set aside the time at least twice a week to play with your kid when you and he are both awake and want to play.  Get as much sleep as you can.  Let things skate that can wait a bit.  That will do you more good than drinking.

Don't you worry-the only thing I've been drinking this semester is COFFEE. It's funny. I didn't drink coffee in college, grad school, or even when I had my son. But-you combine all those commitments and it will make you turn to the dark side FAST!

I do make sure to spend time with him everyday. He's the source of my motivation to succeed, after all. I get home as early as I can-usually 5pm. We play a couple of hours and eat, then he gets a bath and goes to bed by 7-730pm. I usually end up working until midnight, sleep a few hours, and wake up at 5am and do it again. I'll be so happy when this particular semester is over!

are you at all concerned that this place set up a 90 minute teaching demo, but not during a regular class period so that you had students in the audience? And BTW, you were absolutely right in bringing that up in your SC meeting.
