Okay, I admit, this post is probably more a way to distract myself. I've only done a couple NTT searches and always received phone calls, but a couple weeks ago a first round interview request came by email, and then I saw some people comment on getting email requests. So what's more common? Which should I be most obsessed with? (Tongue-in-cheek, of course, as I plan to actually take up advanced basket weaving if I don't hear anything by 5 p.m. since, sigh, it's the weekend again).

Can't say whats more common but we usually email so that we can ask when a good time to call would be (so that we don't catch you off guard with an ill timed phone call). Then we do screening phone interviews.

Oh, snap! Yes, those too. Gosh, I was so focused on the phone and email I forgot. On that now.

If they really want you (and you, them), a Goodyear blimp is sent out with a message at a specific time and place. Of course, you would know that time and place if you were really good.

I was invited for three phone interviews. All were by e-mail.

Although I will say that I jumped every time my phone rang with an unfamiliar number, thinking it might be the SC catching me off-guard. But I haven't gotten any unexpected phone calls.

My limited sample points toward e-mail as most likely (three e-mails, one phone call). The phone call was from a place that otherwise seems to go very far out of its way to seem friendly.

Basically the moral of the story is that bcohlan1 is talking out of his ass again.

We use owls.  And they can find you anywhere, so stop obsessing.

I've only ever been emailed. But then I live in far-off country with crazy time difference. I am pretty much immune from surprise phone calls, and very very happy about that. I hate the phone.

In my limited experience, initial contacts tend to come through email.  In fact, all of mine have come through email and for one school, I never spoke to anyone over the phone up to the point that I arrived for the campus visit.

One place I applied to send Hagrid after me, so really, the email/phone debate was moot. I think he's only leased to certain schools, though.

In my field, we usually send a telegram.

Yes, it's been a while since we've hired.

Some of these answers make me smile.

Meanwhile, I've decided to not worry so much about my phone and stay glued to my email, which I prefer because that means I don't have to let it die on the weekend. I'd write more, but I have to go obsessively check my email.
