Is it necessary to get a padfolio? I have a nice bag that I'm planning on carrying around with me and I can keep my papers in that. Is not having one considered weird though?

I don't even know what a padfolio is, so perhaps others will not either.  I don't think anyone cares what you carry your papers around in as long as it doesn't poke someone in the eye.

I don't know what that is either. Do you just mean, what kind of bag should you bring? Whatever you use, so long as it isn't something odd.

It's one of those leather folder things that holds a legal pad.

I can't speak to whether or not it's weird to not have one--but it doesn't seem like it so far.

Then I can't imagine this mattering in the slightest.

I'd worry more about what socks you wear.

Why in heaven's name would it be considered weird?

I was just checking because it is strongly encouraged for everyone to have one for our career fairs. It just gives you a nice place to put your CV, etc. I just didn't want to be the only person they see with a clipboard or pad of paper or something other than a nice looking binder.

I suspect that your "career fairs" are for a different class of positions and employer's representatives than you will find in the academic community. You do realize that this is a forum for people seeking jobs as college or university faculty, do you not?

It would be a little odd if you were handing out hard copies of your CV during the interview.

Yes, I realize this is a forum for people seeking jobs as college or university faculty. However, if it is common practice for other jobs I thought it might be common practice for a faculty position as well.

In my experience, it is common to carry a portfolio (or padfolio), but nobody would care or notice if you just pulled out a pad of paper to make notes, or had a folder with a spare copy of your CV or such.  An exception might be if you had some sort of cool portfolio or whatnot from Levenger.

I use a beat-up manila file folder that I get from the secretary.  They're reused about a million times.  I then include, in my professional assemble, an Office Depot note pad and a Bic.

And then half of the people who noticed it would be offended and think that you obviously didn't need the job and that you were probably laundering money and making meth on the side a la Breaking Bad to afford anything from Levenger.

Eh, Levenger has good sales. Now, if you were carrying Louis Vuitton, then SCs have the right to be skeptical about your "need" for a job.

I also use manila file folders (though I use new ones).
