Yes, finish that dissertation. Regardless of anything else, submitting that work increases the probabilities.

Of all the variables, I think none is more important than having a finished dissertation, or at least a hard defense date. Although my SLAC hires ABDs, I know of many places that will not look at them due to having been burned in the past.

I had a campus visit 4 weeks ago, and got word that two other candidates received rejection e-mails two weeks ago. (I heard this news from one of the candidates who knows the other candidate who was also rejected).
In the meantime, I've searched my junk mail and have found nothing. This is leading me to believe that I'm runner up to a fourth candidate. Initially, I was thinking that maybe the paperwork was stuck on someone's desk and my offer was imminent, but I think it's been too long for this to be true.
I, too, am ABD (I defend on Friday -- wooot!) and from reading the fora have truly begun to appreciate how lucky I have been to land the interviews that I have, and even maybe come in as #2 in one of them!
So I'm making plans to beg my department chair for an adjunctship next year while I spend the summer turning dissertation chapters into articles and immediately going back on the market as a stronger candidate. Something might still come through, but I'd rather brace myself for that which is closer to realistic. For my own health, at the very least. If it weren't for the fora, I'd feel utterly lonely in this process. Thanks to everyone!

Congrats on the upcoming defense. I received an email this morning from my advisor giving me the green light. I mailed my last chapter off about 10 days ago. She had said that it looked like all systems were go, but she couldn't be sure until she'd read the last chapter. On my list of tasks today is to file for Spring graduation. I'm so excited. It's the best x amount I'll ever spend. After teaching, I stopped at Trader Joe's to buy potables and comestibles before I begin the hibernation period required to submit the thing in 10 days. So, we will celebrate a bit tonight. As for the "not rejected, not accepted" category, I think you are correct. You probably fell into the limbo category. My husband was recently on a SC and they did not notify the runners up of their respective rankings until all was said and done. You never know what might happen, though. Good vibes to you. I finally received the rejection which I'd questioned in this thread-it was quite different than the standard email that went out to about five friends over one month ago so I'm guessing I was in the holding area? I can't be sure and it doesn't really matter at this point. I'm hoping the market will be better for us next year, when we have the degree in hand. I feel somewhat encouraged by this year. I did pretty well considering I applied to five schools. Cheers and heads up for the next round.

Congratulations! Knowing nothing about anything, I will throw out that perhaps the SC is waiting for news of a successful defense from any of the three people still in the running to decide who gets the offer. Just because other people are a definite no doesn't mean you aren't still in the running and the factors of who gets the offer are still in play if everyone left in the pool is still ABD with defense dates scheduled about now.

That's a good point. Thanks polly_mer -- I read in another thread that it's a good idea to send a quick note of a successful defense to all places you've applied. Thanks for the reminder!

I have to take up this thread. If you haven't heard from a school for more than 50 days and they don't respond to your emails, should you assume that the job went to someone else? I have only one school to hear from and they are not giving me any answer--even a little hint. Maybe it's time to move on to whatever is left, right?

Its hard to put a time limit on these things, and its also hard to make assumptions, but the most likely outcome is that the job has gone to someone else or is in any case, beyond the point at which you should be concerned about it. I suggest moving on.

I think so, too. I just hope that they give me some kind of confirmation that it's over, so I can move on and make my summer plans. There may still be a vanishingly small chance that their original offer will come unstuck and they'll end up coming back to you. This is, however, such a long shot that it's really not even worth thinking about. It's time to move on. Good wishes for some nice summer plans, too!
