Title says it all. Some job searches I've applied to are at the pre-interview stage while others are at the pre-campus visit stage. Would emailing the various SCs make a difference? Would letting them know my diss is also nominated for an award make a difference? Thanks in advance.

Congrats!
Yes, yes, yes. During every interview I've had (well, three now), I've been asked about when I will finish. It seems to be a big deal, especially in this market.

Mountainguy (on rejection letter thread): This sounds very Foucauldian. "You do not apply to search committee; the search committee applies to you!!"

Yes, do. Send the SC Chair a brief e-mail noting that you have successfully defended, and indicate when you will submit the final draft. You can also mention that it's been nominated for an award and when the announcement of the award will be.
We do want to know that you're actually going to be done, and a successful defense pretty much nails that down, so it's an important datum. I would NOT inform about the award nomination without having the successful defense to report, but since you have that you can sneak in the award part, too.
Good luck and congratulations.

Cheers, westcoastgirl and aandsdean. Would that also apply to searches that are at the pre-campus invite stage? I wouldn't want to be seen as somehow meddling in their decision-making process.

And it's fair to send an updated CV when the degree has been officially conferred. Or even with a notation that it has been defended.

Thank you tee_bee, larryc, and atlchemist. For those schools that only accept online apps, would it be impolite if I sent the email to whomever is in charge of the Dept. on the administrative side, asking them to forward it to the Chair on my behalf? I'm not quite sure how the etiquette works in a situation like this.

Congratulations. And yes, send it to the SC chair at ALL the places you've applied and not yet been notified of a rejection (do not trust HR with anything important if there's another way to do it is a good lesson for new faculty to have learned). And of course it should also go to places that are at the campus interview stage; we've had to go back into the pool twice in the last decade, and that's in a field with hundreds of applications for every opening and a R-1 in a "good" location. People with outstanding paperwork have been known to be real jerks at a campus visit, once they're feeling self-confident and their usual arrogance comes out. A reminder that someone they liked is no longer in the ABD stack might -- remotely, to be sure -- do some good.

Forgot to ask all of you about the external examiner's report? Is that letter private or can I share it with the various SCs?

You're going way overboard now. A brief note to the SC Chair is all you should be sending. Aandsdean is right that in this instance, you could mention the nomination, because on this occasion, your mention of a potential something rather than an actual something could be chalked up to an understandable burst of enthusiasm after a successful defense. Anything more than a one or two sentence email could hurt rather than help you, because it could make you look like you're clueless.

I would have your adviser send a short email to the committee explaining that you defended and about the award nomination. My adviser did this for me after I defended and I quickly got two campus visits. The people at the first school mentioned the letter specifically and how great it was.
