A few weeks ago, my Dean stopped by my office and congratulated me on the fact that all (five, ugh) of my classes are packed. He said, "you're the only one in your department with five full classes - I'm going to see if I can get you pay bump (equivalent to a course overload) this semester since you have so many students."
After that, not a peep - and we've had one paycheck that did not include a bump.
My husband says I should not ask if the overload went through, that I should just wait and see. But it's been three weeks and it sure would be helpful to know if the extra money is coming. He's just so adamant that I should leave it alone (so that I don't seem money-grubbing, I guess?) that I'm hesitant.
And so, I will defer to your recommendations, Wise Forum.

Asking about overload is not "money-grubbing," it is declaring your own worth as a faculty member. Were I in your situation, I would have asked for overload before the Dean mentioned it (particularly if these five "full" in fact consisted of several classes for which enrollment had been increased for whatever reason).

Well, they weren't increased in size, but they are all writing-intensive classes. I think you're right. I'm going to go ask (politely, respectfully) right now.

I have twice been assured overload pay, and twice had to nicely ask for the overload pay to show up in my bank account after the semester's first check had been issued. By all means, ask!

I am getting the bump, hooray! And it turns out that Dean had just forgotten to follow up with the higher-level Admincritters, so I'm very glad that I asked.

Awesome.
Yes, you have to ask, especially when the higher up specifically initiated this, and was doing it because he thought you deserved it and were doing something others were not.

Since the dean himself brought up the idea, it would be perfectly appropriate to ask.

Yep. Dean wants to reward you. Ask again. Dean has many things to worry about and sometimes nice things slip through the cracks, when bad things arise. This is a nice thing for the Dean.
Or just hire an agent to do the negotiations for you.

I asked and I shall receive. Retroactive to the start of term, starting with the next paycheck. This round is on me... *grin*

Congrats. Don't celebrate yet, you still have those "writing-intensive classes" to grade. Stick that bonus into a 529 for the kids, or into a Roth or 401(k) for you?

I don't have kids, but I do have plenty of things I can throw the money at. Probably a good chunk of it is going to go toward credit card bills and the rest into building an emergency fund.
