I just flew eight legs on Delta in the last two weeks, and didn't get a single upgrade at Silver level. I was usually in the mid 20s on the upgrade list. These were domestic flights via ATL. Your mileage will obviously vary, but with the packed planes it seems upgrades are much less likely.

Well, I can report that my scheme worked. I changed my ff number to my Delta number before the flight and got Delta miles, but got to keep my free economy comfort seats.
I did run into a snag on the return though, since I had to reschedule my flight. The new flight got booked with my Delta ff number, and apparently you can't change away from a Delta ff, so no free economy comfort seats on that flight. Oh well, I am now halfway to Silver. If I get one more interview invitation, I should be able to get to gold.

Wow, you people are either super smart or super lucky. I an silver elite with Delta, and I've never had an upgrade :(.
