Hi, yall.  I tried to find this kind of question previously answered on the fora and couldn't, so:

I have a one-year VAP, and am now doing campus visits--one last week, one next week.  Last week's went well, and SCC asked me to let him know if I got another offer, had any other questions, etc.

Today, my dept. chair offered to extend my VAP another year, with a slight raise.

So...do I tell already-visited #1 about this offer?  I kinda wanna go see #2 and I don't actually want to force #1 to hurry up their process.  Their last candidate is there now-ish, and they indicated a decision might be forthcoming mid-February [right around when I get back from #2].

My dept. chair is in no big rush at the moment, so I don't need to give him an answer too soon.  There is really no question of me staying here if I have a permanent position offered somewhere else.

Thanks, as always, for your wise counsel.

I'm just an applicant, but I think the point of letting another school know about an offer is because you usually have a decision clock that starts after the offer. It sounds like you don't have to make any decisions before you will hear from the others, so I wouldn't bother.

Under the conditions that you've described, if it's just a one year extension of your VAP I don't think it's worth it to mention it to #1.  In my opinion it doesn't really count as leverage and you might even look a bit foolish presenting it to #1 as a "competing offer".  Even if you don't explicitly pose it that way, it will look as if you are trying to.  Let your visits play themselves out and I hope you get offers from #1 and #2 on the same day so you can really negotiate!

You don't have a reason to contact the SC.  You have an offer to extend your VAP, not a competing TT offer.

Best wishes to you.

No you shouldn't.

But - if things drag on for a while and it gets to the point (probably sometime mid-March) where your current department needs to know whether to start a search for a VAP for next year - you should say something.  Feel free to frame the issue as one of courtesy to your current department.

Right, then, four substantially identical answers later and the result is about what I expected.  I'll clam up and wait to see what comes of #1 and #2 (and keep AFTDJ to everything else in the meantime).

I agree with everyone as well. But congratulations--this must take a little of the pressure off.

Yes, you improved your BATNA if it ever comes to negotiation, but it's nothing to tell the SCs at the moment.
