Filene's and Filene's Basement were separate entities (albeit historically linked), and I could only afford to shop at one of the two.  Filene's was indeed bought by Macy's, but Filene's Basement filed Chapter 11 late last year & closed down all stores within the past month.

The ring is but the tip of the iceberg, no?  At a campus interview at a school with other young faculty with young children, everyone was very careful not to ask me questions about marital status, children, etc., but also eager to point out all the available resources for families and the kid-friendliness of the school and the town.  For these and other reasons relating to my potential role at this particular college, and as a way of connecting with some of the faculty, I was open about talking about my children (one of whom is quite new indeed), but said next to nothing about my partner (as it didn't really come up).  And good lord, I wore my ring. It seems like the best approach (as usual) is to do what Larry C suggests: be yourself and knock 'em dead.  Otherwise, the machinations of how to play the family-status card can make things dishonest and weird.

Of course, icebergs can also sink big ships...
