Do schools have cutoffs below which they don't consider candidates or are there ranges ?  Or does it depend on the department and the admissions committee ?

I hope this sounds appropriate and not trite, but the reason I posted this thread is because there is a reason my scores are low - it was medical.  I did my GRE after the application (ie. after I write my statement of purpose), so is there any value in sending an email to the prospective supervisor explaining my low GRE scores at this point.

Thank you.

I would probably stay silent until you receive a decision unless you feel that your whole application is hinging on the GRE scores, which doesn't seem likely in engineering.  I had a medical problem one semester and had pretty bad grades to show for it.  A professor of mine suggested I keep quiet because, while illegal, people will discriminate based on medical conditions.  When I got denied to one of my top choices, I asked the adcom chair what I could do to make my application stronger next year.  He responded that my grades were particularly low in some very important courses (during my bad semester).  I explained myself while still being somewhat vague on the specific condition.  A few weeks later, I received notice that they reversed their decision.

sciencegrad: Thank you for your response.

I think I will go ahead with my email as I think my GRE is going to affect my chances given the other weak parts of my application.  I will have to tread lightly and with caution, as an email during the evaluation process, I think can go either ways.

Thanks again.
