Always very nearly hired

« on: January 25, 2012, 12:39:55 PM »

At times, I drop in and say "Hi" and exchange small talk with colleague of the opposite sex in another department. I don't stay a long time and I don't reveal deep things about myself. Colleague mentioned anniversary and upcoming out-of-town visit with spouse. I replied, "Oh, I'm sure you'll have a good time in [name of urban city here]." Colleague replies, "I'll be thinking of you."

Wha? I can only hope colleague means, "thinking of you toiling away while I'm enjoying myself with my beloved spouse."

Colleague has also commented that he/she enjoys my dropping by... Now I'm scared to drop by again. It's nothing--right? Tell me it's nothing... I'm sure it's nothing... I want it to be nothing...

It's probably one of those rote answers that one spouts out without thinking in response to a certain conversational stimulus.  You know---accidentally saying "I love you!" when hanging up the phone with an acquaintance, just because most of the time you talk to your spouse and sign off with that.

He/She is probably mortified also.

Or maybe it was a joke?

A weird joke.

I'd say this is a pretty standard joke-y response to someone saying have a nice vacation and that the speaker didn't think that it would sound different given that the vacay is for an anniversary. Just ignore it and continue as usual.

Now, if they bring you back a suggestive gift.... run for the hills!

I'd go with this unless or until you got a stronger sign suggesting otherwise.

Does colleague initiate visits, or are you the one to always drop by? If no, it's absolutely nothing.  If yes, it probably is nothing.  Either way, it will continue to be nothing, if conversation is as innocent as you describe.  (Ummm, but don't be standing/ wairing outside colleague's office, Monday morn when s/he returns.)
