You can also go outside your departmental cohort to find fellow geeks.  I've never been enrolled in a geoscience program, but, man, did we have some good interactions.  Where are the science geeks in your school?  Find them to get your fix.

This is probably what I'll do.  I've been able to meet some people in different fields through the people in my lab due to its interdisciplinary nature.

Just because you spend your free time getting blasted doesn't mean you're a bad researcher...

This isn't what I was implying.  I'm talking about their passion for the field, not their ability as a researcher.

Maybe they're just super laid-back? A lotta people have no clue what they wanna do. Academia's no different, it seems.
