I am a non EU Asian citizen in Germany who will complete a PhD in Social Sciences with a topic of considerable policy relevance. My intention is to stay in academics in the West, though I am open to policy jobs too. I have heard that it is very difficult to climb the academic ladder here, and that there are few academic jobs around. I am also in my late 30s, and have had a varied career, including jobs as a journalist, development worker, and teacher at universities. If I stay on here, I can get a citizenship if I can find a job in my field a year after graduation, (I am not affected by the normal labour laws of the EU since I am considered as equal to a German citizen in the job market since I have a German degree) and then I can apply throughout the EU for a job.
At the same time, I do not know if this is  a good idea. I am now reconsidering if doing the PhD was worth it, since if I had done it in Canada I could have got the citizenship by now. But when I completed my Masters here, I was offered a funded position, and with my varied background I was not sure how admissions committee in the US or Canada would see my profile.  Is it a good idea to take a post doc here, or should I apply to Canada or the US for post docs? What are my chances—I have published, and my topic is of high contemporary relevance especially from a policy making perspective. The one thing I don’t want to do is go back to my country.
Can anyone help? Has anyone been in the same situation---a non EU citizen with a PhD from a German university? Did you find a job here? Or did you find a job abroad in the West? Please help. I always lack good advice at the right moment.

"I always lack good advice at the right moment" This is not meant in a negative way to the people here. It just means that if I knew then what I do now in many things, I would have done things differently, and I can t control my mind looking at the past and thinking that this would be better, that would be better etc, etc, etc. Is this common? How do you control it in stressful situations>
