It's funny. Once a while, my supervisor suddenly lost his temper, I was so shocked. After that,  we had a disagreement to discuss something,  then I called him "Monster".  Afterward,  I apologized to  him a few times. he didn't respond. But even now , I still feel he is really scary though.

If you actually referred to your dissertation chair as "Monster", suddenly all your posts about your dynamic with him make more sense.

Agreed.

Was there doubt?

I was trying the friendlier "give folks the benefit of the doubt" thought process for much of the Newer saga.  Was that wrong?

Nah. It just turns out that cynicism saves a lot of time. ;)

If you need me, I'll be hiding under a rock until mid-August. Try not to need me, unless you come bearing Chinese food.

Well, it's the beginning of the term here, so I'm still consciously going with extremely helpful mode as students sort themselves into categories of "don't waste any time on me because I don't care", "I try hard, but I do need a lot of help", "I will pester you mercilessly for every quarter point because I NEED an A", and "I'm basically good, but I'll ask a few questions as necessary".

My cynicism at this point is that the last category generally has the most people for my engineering classes and the fewest people for science for teachers while no engineers ever pester for a quarter point and that's the biggest category for education majors.
