Scout, if you're going to do it, sounds like you're doing it right. You've got funding, a great program, a supportive spouse, so why not? Do you love this topic more than anything? Are you willing to move anywhere for a job? Could your spouse? If all that is a yes, then go for it.
I didn't have half the advantages you seem to - I had low funding and had to take out loans, I eventually married (and later divorced) someone who was not willing to move, my school was well ranked but nothing like Harvard. And yet I still found a job, in the humanities, and I, for one, love my job.

I just got my first rejection. Ouch. It was from a school that I thought was more within my reach, so that made it particularly difficult. Also, they don't even mail a letter out. You log on to the webpage and a form letter applicable to graduate students applying to any program lets you know that you've been denied admissions. For $70+ I can't even get an actual letter with a stamped signature on it mailed to me?
I'm just venting and masking that I'm bummed.
It wasn't the school that I most wanted to go to. For academic reasons it wasn't a perfect fit, but for personal reasons it would've been great. I have a lot more letters coming, hopefully one of them will be good.
Thanks for reading.

E-mails are *so* much better than letters. Nothing worse than obsessing over when USPS gets to your home, checking the mailbox 3 times day, and when you finally get your envelope, it contains a (nicely written) rejection. At least with an e-mail you know sooner.

edmonddantes: I got rejected to a couple schools that I thought would admit me and was surprised to get in to one I thought would reject me. If you feel that this particular school wasn't a perfect fit academically, perhaps it will make you feel better if you consider that the admissions committee may have recognized this. That thinking made some of my rejections less painful. If their faculty don't think I would be a perfect fit, then they may very well be saving me years of discontent.

Hi All!
I'm normally not a forum troll, but since applying for grad programs I can't seem to stop trying to reach out and find others who are suffering in the same way that I am! Great OP :)
I've been lucky though. It's early in The Season and I've gotten accepted into my #1 choice school for a PhD program. I applied with a pending UG degree (I graduate with a BA in May).I was hopeful but cautious, but all my recommenders and professors thought I had a strong application. They were right (yet again) :)
Good Luck to Everyone!

edmonddantes -- I feel for you! But don't worry, not yet at least, you never know what's in store for you!
mediumrare -- congrats! :)
In other news, I've actually got all of my results in! Crazy so early in the process. Accepted to 3, rejected from 2, but I'm going to be going to one of my top 2 choices, and I feel pretty darn good about the whole thing! :)
GOOD LUCK all!

Congrats to all hearing good news.
Its the 21st now and not a peep from ANY of the schools I applied to. I'm starting to get very, very apprehensive about all of this.
Do you find that all of the programs you applied to sent you email confirmation of the applications? Two of the unis I applied to responded with an automated confirmation, another of the two were dead silent. I even sent an email and left a voicemail for both of them with no answer. I didn't want to call again to seem pushy, but its really starting to drive me nuts.
It's just really disheartening to hear about all the major success your friends are having with their apps, and not even knowing if you have failed yet for any of your own.

For what it's worth, I'm on the graduate admissions committee in my department, and we haven't yet met to talk about applications. (We're slow.) So no news doesn't necessarily mean bad news, just that committees are sometimes slow. Hope that perspective helps.

Your response is definitely much appreciated.
I'm primarily worried about whether the top two choices received my applications in full....I know I submitted them by or on the deadline, but never received email confirmation. I have been frantically trying to contact them but so far no luck.

I'm a first year grad student. About half or so of the 9 schools I applied to didn't give me a decision until after April 15! One of the programs that admitted me before April 15 only gave me an extension of one week to make my decision. I ended up having to decide before I heard back from a couple schools.

I recommend not doing this. I think if you've already emailed them one time, any more emails will just make them see you as annoying and high-maintenance.

Thanks for reinforcing it. I did however receive my first reply..a rejection via a very polite email from my no.1 pick...can't win 'em all!
