Jesus f***ing christ. All I want to do is insert into my page header the same thing I can insert in two seconds by using "View header/footer" in Word 2003:

flush left: [TITLE]
flush right: page [PAGE #] of [TOTAL NUMBER OF PAGES]

I have figured out how to open a header. I can type inside the header. But I see no way to insert the customized page numbering in Word 2010. Can anyone help me?

I DO NOT HAVE TIME FOR THIS s***!!!

Sorry. Sorry. Don't want to lose my temper. But seriously, I just have no patience for this sort of thing. I'm sure it's a serious character flaw.

They've made this nearly impossible. In Word 2011 on the Mac, you go to Insert > Auto Text and then chose Page X of Y from the list. I've discovered that you can then delete or modify "page" and "of" and preserve the fields that actually insert the page number and number of pages - fields that you used to be able to insert manually before Microsoft started to try to "help."

I'm glad I'm not alone.

I found it. It's really cute how when I click on the "page X of Y," it inserts the numbers in boldface and also deletes the other text I had typed into the header.

Do I really have to go to Office Help every time I want to do something THAT USED TO BE REALLY SIMPLE? Really? WHY?!

Here is the pain in the a$$ slow way of doing this. If you found a better, more efficient way.. my all means...

Open the headers..
select blank header
insert the page number at the current location (page x of y.. will over-write everything so do this first)
hit the space bar exactly once
click "insert alignment tab" select right (this will move the page numbers all the way to the right margin)
Put the cursor back at the left margin
Type in the title.

Format the title & numbers to your heart's content.

Maybe I'm missing something... but double click at the top of the page (above where your text is), which opens the header design menu. Then, enter your title (which will be flush left), hit tab twice to get flush right, go to "page number" -> current position -> select Page X of Y. Highlight that and remove the bold, if desired.

I love my Word 2003. I hope I shall be able to use it forever.

Oh, dear, yes, there's something new and weird in 2010 if you now want both text and page numbering in your header. I went through this a few months ago, and I will try to remember exactly what the issue was, and what the weird workaround is. I really, really hate it, too.

Y'all are making this too hard.

1)  Go into the header by selecting the "Insert" tab on the ribbon and then "Header" from the Insert ribbon.

2)  The cursor will be at the left margin.  Type your title.

3)  Hit the tab key twice, which leaves your title on the left and puts your cursor at the right margin.

4)  The "Header and Footer Tools" tab (which normally isn't visible, unless you're in the header or footer) on the ribbon is activated at this point.  Select "Quick Parts" from the "Insert" area of the Header and Footer Tools ribbon, and then click on "Field..."

5)  Click on "Page" to insert the current page number.

6)  Type a space, the word "of," and another space after the field with the page number.

7)  Again select "Quick Parts" from the "Insert" area of the Header and Footer Tools ribbon, click on "Field..." again, and this time click on "NumPages."

8)  Voila, you have your header:  [TITLE] is flush left, and [PAGE NUMBER] of [NUMBER OF PAGES] is flush right.

I don't think it's us making it too hard.

My point was simply that, like most things, once you know the steps, it's really not hard at all.  (C'mon, you're educators--you know this is true.)  The problem was simply that the OP didn't know how to do it.

Yes, but the issue on this one is a particularly nasty piece of work from the Microsoft people. It is not easy to figure out what Word 2010 wants you to do for a running head with both text and automatic page numbering--which is a publication standard for most of us. As I, too, discovered, the Help function within Word itself is completely unhelpful on this one. I finally found a blogger somewhere online who explained it clearly, and now I can neither remember it, nor find the entry again--and I also cannot figure it out again, even having done it once.

I dunno about that.  When I started using Word 2007 (and now 2010), it took me about 10 seconds to find the feature that enables you to do what the OP wanted (since I, too, regularly use text and page numbers in my headers).  I agree with you however that, ever since Word 2007 (Office 2007, for that matter) came out, the "help" features have been absolutely worthless--which is a shame, because they used to be quite good, especially the F1 contextual help.

Anyway, I posted the procedure for having both text and a page number (with or without the "of [TOTAL NUMBER OF PAGES]" piece) up above.  This should do the trick.  Good luck.

It`s absurd to have to do something in eight steps that used to involve basically two steps (View header/footer; click on the /of Y/ thing). Sorry, my keyboard is dying.
