Has anyone heard of colleges or universities offering newly hired faculty moving in from another location: 1) the services of a relocation company that will sell their currently owned home for them; or 2) a cash incentive to move, to compensate for a loss they will take on selling their currently owned home?

I haven't, but that does not mean it could exist.

If it does exist, I speculate it would happen at elite universities or for recently-hired elite faculty.

I don't think relocation funds are common in academia.  It's more a corporate thing.

I had a colleague that moved to the USDA, and they paid her real estate agent's commission.  Of course, this was 6 years ago - not sure what would happen now.

I just moved, and asked for something similar, or a cash bonus for house selling reasons.  They (c/w)ouldn't do it, so I got my salary bumped up by about $10K/year instead. The better solution in the long term.

From the department side, paying relocation is cheaper in the long run, as it is a one-time cost rather than a continuing expense.

I dont know the current numbers,but I was given $2000 "to defray the moving costs".

As part of oour Employee Assistance Program (I think) we could call someone and get assistance on the move.  The estimate from the mover was $7000 ish and they got the bill down to about $4000.

There was no help on the house.  I do think that is a corporate thing.

My university pays the relocation expenses for high-ranking administrators, but offers not one dime to faculty.

Oh, I got moving expenses - they paid to move both my household and my laboratory (came to about $25,000 total). This is standard in any STEM field - if they couldn't or wouldn't do that there is no way in hell I would have joined.

I wanted something additional to help defray the cost of selling my house.  They wouldn't do that, so I asked for a significant salary bump.  This they were able to do.

Works out better for me.

I was offered something like this once - they would pay the difference between sale price and payoff amount on my mortgage if necessary. However, this was before the housing market went into free fall. I doubt I could get such a benefit now.

My university paid my moving costs (up to $7K) but they didn't do much beyond that. I had two mortgages going for about three months. Those were harrowing times, but we got really lucky and sold the old place.

Our university will pay an amount up to 10% of the new hire's salary for moving expenses.  We have contracts with most of the major movers so it is rare that moving expenses aren't fully covered.  Lab moves get negotiated separately but I haven't seen a lab move not get paid by the university.

Each department has the ability to negotiate a relocation payment as well that can assist with other costs of the transition.  These typically don't exceed about 10% of the new faculty member’s salary.

Significant relo assistance is (or was) pretty common with large corporations, but is uncommon in academia (faculty jobs).  By "significant," I mean all costs involved with selling and buying homes, and moving expenses, which can easily go over $20K.

I am staff, not faculty, and my University paid my moving expenses. They would have paid up to $3,000, but since I was just moving from a neighboring state, I didn't need that much.
