Are tissues office supplies? That is, should you expect your employer to purchase them for you to use? Should you use the ones your employer provides even if you don't prefer them.

I have never gotten my head around this practice. I have very specific tissue needs. To me they are hygiene items like other personal effects. Yet the secretary buys them with my considerations in mind.

My pressing work/life balance issue of the day.

Confused and sad. Or happy. I'm not sure...

I would love it if my employer supplied some, even if they were not my preferred brand. I'd share them with students. As it is, I buy my own box and carry it to class with me. Occasionally, students ask if they may have one, and I never refuse.

My mother cannot see why I insist on a certain brand; she buys whatever is least expensive. They feel like sandpaper and given my frequent use, rub my nose raw. Infrequent users really don't' appreciate the differences in quality people like me do.

I'd ask if your brand could be purchased instead. And if not, use those for sharing with students and coworkers while you supply your own for personal use. If you are questioned, explain you are particularly sensitive and have found you have fewer problems with brand X.

Many years ago I worked for a Fortune 100 company that had tissues, along with the pens and notebooks in the paper supply cabinet.  I was actually quite surprised - and don't think that I have seen that anywhere since.  yes, I bring in my own box and put them on my desk these days.

Hmmm. I generally think of my current department as stingy, but they provide Kleenex-brand tissues and notebooks and pens. Also bandaids and Tylenol. I will reassess my opinion of them in light of this.

Whatever you do, don't use lab paper towels instead! I got a paper cut on my nose that way.

My uni does indeed provide tissues, but rather stingily -- the department gives me one box a year, but in my admin capacity I can have a box whenever I want.  I use theirs when I'm in the office, but they're not the kind I prefer (I like the really big ones).  But it's handy to have a box there, and I would never bring a box of my own big ones in (lest someone use them!).

Yes, these are provided now, but I was told with budget cuts the ones I see in the cabinet are the last that will be provided. Oh well.

If I get a cold, I bring a box of generic facial tissues from home.  Otherwise, I use the paper towels or kimwipes that are readily available at the office/lab.

The really soft facial tissues feel nice, but they tend to leave paper flakes on my upper lip.  I do better with the regular ones unless I am sick enough to rub my nose raw with frequent wiping.

I've never heard of this. There are paper towels in the washrooms.

Our office does not provide tissues. I buy my own. But what's all this about paying attention to what's in in the box? As long as they're lotion-free, the type of tissue doesn't matter to me. The important thing is matching the box to my office decor.

True confession: I will open, refill, and re-use a tissue box if I really love its design.

Our student government group is lobbying to have tissues provided in all classrooms.  Personally, I'd rather see the classrooms have recycling containers, but the students are hot-to-trot on the tissue thing right now.

Not even paper towels in the washrooms here. We have one of those warm air blower drying things. To dry my hands I go to the kitchen to get paper towels (I hate the blowers).

The university did provide everyone with one box of tissues when swine flu threatened to become an epidemic, but that was two years ago and it has not happened since.

Office Depot and Staples are office supply stores. Office Depot and Staples sell tissues, therefore, tissues are office supplies.

They also sell Danish butter cookies (and lots more) therefore cookies should be provided in our offices.
